The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are Apple's most advanced phones yet. But what's actually new, and does it matter for you? Here's a plain-English guide for UAE buyers.

1. A camera that works like a real camera

The biggest upgrade is variable aperture on the 48MP main camera. Six blades adjust the opening between f/1.48 and f/4. In practice, you can blur the background of a portrait or keep a whole group photo sharp. That used to need a DSLR. New Pro controls also let you set shutter speed and white balance by hand.

Video gets upgrades too: 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse, and Cinematic blur you can add after recording (Apple Newsroom).

2. A20 Pro chip: faster and cooler

The new 2nm chip has graphics up to 40% faster and twice the AI processing power of last year's model. A larger cooling system (vapour chamber) keeps performance steady during long gaming sessions or 4K recording. That matters in UAE summers.

3. Better battery life and faster charging

The Pro Max runs up to 45 hours of video playback. The Pro charges to 50% in about 15 minutes with a cable.

4. Connectivity: eSIM-only in the UAE

UAE models have no physical SIM slot. They work with e& and du via eSIM. If you travel often or use a SIM from another country, check that your network supports eSIM first. You also get Wi-Fi 7 and Apple's new C2 modem, which uses 15% less power.

5. Apple Reference Image and Siri AI

Apple Reference Image can digitally sign your photos to prove they haven't been edited. Siri AI arrives with iOS 27, but it's still in beta and English-only for now.

What hasn't changed

Screen sizes, the telephoto camera and the overall design are mostly carried over from the iPhone 17 Pro (Engadget review).

What to look for before you buy

• Upgrading from an iPhone 16 Pro or older? It's worth it. On an iPhone 17 Pro, you can skip it unless photography is your passion.
• Choose the right size. The Pro Max has noticeably longer battery life. The Pro is easier to use with one hand.
• Don't under-buy storage. If you shoot a lot of 4K video, 512GB is the practical minimum.
• Buy from an authorised UAE seller to get Apple's local warranty.
